it was about November, i believe of 84, I was about 4 or 5 years old and we lived at 2194 Bayview in Brooklyn on the fourth floor and one day i was in the back in my room playing with my little sister and it was just me and Leslie home and my mom and we had a few pets we had a cat named chichi and a dog named nacho and a couple other pets, some birds snakes different kind of i think gerbils anyway i remember my mom came and she got me and my sister and like. she as rushing and frantic and that apartment when we were walking out to get to the exit to leave the apartment the kitchen was right on the left side so as we went to leave you could see smoke coming out of the kitchen and when we looked real quick before we walked out i noticed flames and that's when i saw the kitchen was on fire and so we stood out on the hallway my mom and my sister and we knocked on neighbors doors if they could call 911 because at that time there was no cellphone service and what had happened was that time we didn't have a washer or dryer and there was a laundromat in the because it was public housing there was a laundromat but it was inconvenient and sometimes the elevator didn't work so my mom would hand wash some things and hang them to dry over the stove she had a stick in between two cabinets and hang them to dry, of course bad idea but at that time... so what happened was she had a pair of jeans up there and they caught fire and she tried to put it out but it spread to the curtains and so we were standing outside waiting for the firemen and not even two minutes after we left the apartment and closes the door we remembered the dog so we opened the door and nacho came out running out and we kept calling for chichi and she wouldn't come and later on after the firemen came and put out the fire we realized that she died from smoke inhalation in the backroom she was scared and hid in the backroom and the mostly all the pets didn't make it. except for nacho the Chihuahua we had and the snake and my two brothers came home and the fire was put out and that night we froze because the firemen broke a ll the windows and. we had to put plastic garbage bags on the windows but thank god no one was hurt and my mom learned her lesson to never put clothes to dry over an open flames and we left that apartment a short time later and moved into another one.
